      • Pavillon Campus mondial de la mer

          • Pavillon Campus mondial de la mer
          • The Campus mondial de la mer is France’s foremost community of experts in the study and economic development of the ocean.
          • As well as being home to France's leading marine science and technology community, the Campus boasts an extremely broad range of expertise in both life sciences and technology. Often at the crossroads of the two. So, in addition to the traditional maritime sectors (shipping, fishing, shipbuilding, etc.), our region and its community have focused on innovation and developed expertise in high-potential sectors such as maritime cybersecuritymarine biotechnologiesmarine renewable energiesdecarbonisation of maritime transport, etc. All themes in line with the major European policies on the development of the blue economy.

This diversity of expertise, the fruit of Brest's maritime history - particularly its military presence - and of a strong political will since the end of the 60s to invest in the field of marine sciences and technologies, now makes it possible for countless scientific, economic and institutional collaborations to take place between our players, IfremerShom, the Polar InstituteCedreFrance Energies Marines, the Pôle de Compétitivité Mer Bretagne Atlantique and Océanopolis, to name but a few - with their counterparts all over the world: Plymouth, Kiel, Bergen, Qingdao, Goa, Woods-Hole, Cadiz, Yokosuka... The Université de Bretagne Occidentale, for example, is part of the SEA-EU alliance, a true European university of the sea with Cadiz, Split, Gdansk, Naples and Kiel. All this expertise makes Brest and Brittany the place to be for top-level marine research, training and information, innovation, project development and business start-ups.

The Campus mondial de la mer has a dual purpose:

            1. Firstly, to encourage acculturation between research and business, with the aim of creating more value: a better understanding of the ocean, more business start-ups, more innovative projects and therefore more maritime jobs. To achieve this, the Technopôle Brest-Iroise team, which runs the Campus, is networking the players in the Finistère area. The Rencontres Immersion, organised 3 times a year, for example, create links between researchers and entrepreneurs on specific subjects: metrology and marine sciences, biomimicry, naval engineering, mechanical testing, etc. These events give rise to meetings that lead to better mutual understanding and, where appropriate, to collaborations.
            2. Secondly, to highlight the expertise of the players in its community in France and internationally, in order to build bridges with other maritime regions. This will be achieved by organising international events such as Sea Tech Week®, rolling out the Ocean Hackathon® in 12 cities in France and internationally in 2022, making marine-related research infrastructures and facilities accessible to our international partners, and promoting expertise through our international journal SONAR, published twice a year. Brest's hosting of the One Ocean Summit in February 2022 and the European Maritime Day in May 2023 are further recognition of the city's international profile.

The Campus is therefore this network of players and this sounding board for their actions to make Brest and Brittany, a little more tomorrow than they are today, a key world centre for marine sciences and technologies. A place that contributes dynamically and non-exclusively to a better understanding of the ocean and the development of a sustainable blue economy.
